Who is Jesus?

Almost every religion in the world acknowledges Jesus in some way.

Hindus believe Jesus to be one of their 330 million gods. Buddhism acknowledges Jesus as a great moral teacher. Jews believe Jesus to be a prophet. Islam holds Jesus as a great prophet, born of a virgin, sinless, ascended to heaven, and the judge of the world. It is important to note that history as well as religion recognizes the existence of a real man named Jesus from Nazareth who led a movement, performed mighty works, offered incredible teachings, made audacious claims that ultimately led to his death on a cross which radically changed the world forever. This is no fairy tale. The person and words of Jesus are historical; whether you believe they are true or not is up to you.

Jesus says "if anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own" (John 7:17). So let's take a look at some of the teachings of Jesus and you can decide for yourself. Who do you say Jesus is?

  • Jesus claims to be God
    • John 10:30-33
    • Matthew 26:63-65
    • John 8:58-59
    • John 14:8-9

  • Jesus claims to come from Heaven
    • John 6:38
    • John 16:28

  • Jesus claims Truth
    • John 14:6
    • John 18:37
  • Jesus claims to be without sin
    • John 8:46
    • John 18:23

  • Jesus claims to be the only way to Heaven/salvation
    • John 3:16
    • John 3:17-18
    • John 5:24
    • John 6:40
    • John 10:9
    • John 11:25
    • John 14:6

John 8:46 "If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?" These are some of the recorded words and teachings of Jesus. I invite you as Jesus did to evaluate and test them. You will come to one of three possible conclusions: Jesus is either a liar and he has misled millions of people over the past 2000 years. Jesus is a lunatic and he really believed these things about himself but is no more the Son of God than I am the King of England. Jesus really is who he says he is: the promised Messiah, Son of God, savior of the world. If you determine that his words are true, then why not follow him?

The Good News of Jesus

Who God Is:

Is there a god? If there is, then is He good? Does He care about us? If you think about it, there are really only two options when it comes to God. Either God created man or man created God. If there is something out there that is responsible for us being here, then wouldn't it make sense to find out everything you can about this God.

After examining these questions myself, the only logical conclusion is that there is a God. He is the very definition of good. Things are only good because they are from God. Incredibly, this God also cares about his creation and desires a relationship with us. He is a just judge, an eternal being, the creator and sustainer of all life. He is truth. He is provision. He is love. He is life. He desires for us to know him and tells us that when we seek him with all our hearts we will find him.

Who you are:

I'm not talking about your name, what you do for a living, or what would come up if I googled you. I'm talking about who you are in relation to God. Who does God say you are? The Bible tells us that no one is perfect except God himself. Since no one is perfect, how good is good enough to be with God in Heaven? If heaven is perfect because God is there and you are not perfect, could God even let you in? If we have done even one thing wrong, then we have fallen short of God's standard of perfection and are therefore disqualified from being with a perfect God. Like a drop of poison in a glass of purified water, so it is with us and sin. Even a little bit taints the whole glass and the result is death. Since you are not perfect, you have been separated from God! This is a problem that you can't fix on your own. You need a Savior.

What He has done:

We have been separated from God and there is nothing we can do on our own to remedy this. "Won't God forgive us?" you may ask. The consequence of our sin is death and God being a just judge must honor this penalty. Forgiveness always requires someone to pay the price. Because of your sin, someone has to die. But something incredible has happened. This God of love and justice has seen our desperate situation and has gone to the extent of sending his one and only Son as the solution. Jesus came to this earth and lived a perfect life, making him the only person worthy of being in the presence of the Father. Jesus then offered us a proposal: our sins and consequently our punishment of death in exchange for his perfection so that we can be with God. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me! He takes on our death and we get eternal life with God. Jesus has bridged the gap between man and God.

What's your response?

This proposal of grace is offered to everyone, and it is God's desire that all would accept it. However, like an engagement proposal, the choice is up to you. Now that you've heard the proposal, do you want to have a personal relationship with God? If so, surrender your life to Jesus without reservation or delay. You can do nothing to deserve this gift, but if you want to receive it then you must trust Jesus as your savior and obey him as your Lord. "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
